Rare Books and Manuscripts Etiquette

• After checking in with the front desk outside the rare books room you will need to leave your coat, bags, and any other personal belongings behind the desk or in a locker downstairs before you can enter the rare books room.

• You can only bring loose paper, pencils, and phones into the rare books and manuscripts room.

• You need to treat the space like any other library, and be quiet and respectful while working.

• Try to limit the contact between your hands and the pages, as the oils on your skin can damage the pages. You can ask librarians for sock weights to hold down the pages. While reading and working, keep the books on the foam wedges rather than on the table. The books are very fragile, so be gentle when handling them.

• When you leave the room, return your registration card to the front desk.
